Ford Edsel vintage car found on the side of the road

Photography

Ford Edsel Art Online

Driving around my former hometown of East Haddam, Connecticut (one of many since I was an army brat), I came across a glorious site. Right next to formerly grand home in need of repair, parked along the railroad tracks of the Essex Steam Train and Valley Railroad and right across the street of the old train station now gift shop was this vintage beauty – a pink Ford Edsel.

The Edsel was an automobile marque that was planned, developed, and manufactured by the Ford Motor Company during the 1958, 1959, and 1960 model years. With the Edsel, Ford had expected to make significant inroads into the market share of both General Motors and Chrysler and close the gap between itself and GM in the domestic American automotive market. But contrary to Ford’s internal plans and projections, the Edsel never gained popularity with contemporary American car buyers and sold poorly. The Ford Motor Company lost millions of dollars on the Edsel’s development, manufacturing and marketing. The very word “Edsel” became a popular symbol for failure.

Ford Edsel Photography Prints

Despite the negative connotations of the Ford Edsel, it really is a beauty of a car. Decked out in all manner of extravagance from the excessive chrome, the elongated lines and distinctive shield like front grill.

I have to thank the owner for parking this beauty for me to discover.  A few days later I returned to the same spot but alas it was gone.  If there is one truism in photography it is to stop and take the shot when you see it.  Don’t expect your subject to be there the next month, next day or even the next hours.

I’ve had countless experiences where I’ve returned to a spot to find my subject moved, demolished or otherwise just gone.

How true!

Sometimes playful and clownish, sometimes calm and dignified, always sturdy and stable, good-humored and amiable — this is the Pug.

Though peaceful with all the world, the Pug will sound off with his rather odd bark when visitors arrive. Then he will welcome them inside with snorts, snuffles, and grunts.

As is the case with most short-faced dogs, his large expressive eyes, wrinkled forehead, cocked head, innocent expression, and strange sounds bring out parental feelings in many people.

A Pug is very childlike and always needs to be with you.

Unlike the more energetic members of their species, pugs sleep an average of 14 hours a day, and any pug owner can tell you it can be quite a feat to get a comfy pug off the couch.

How fun is this? Shooting Legoland with a Fisheye lens

Photography

Legoland Art Online

A trip to Florida’s version of Legoland was the perfect excuse to pull out the fisheye lens and take some unique perceptive photographs of the iconic American landmarks created out of toy Lego bricks.

Washington, D.C. sports faithful re-creations of the White House (including the first family and “first dog”), the U.S. Capitol building, Smithsonian, Washington and Jefferson monuments and parts of Georgetown. An animated marching band parades in front of the Capitol and tiny cherry trees blossom every spring.

For this photograph I was using a micro four thirds mirror-less camera the Panasonic with a Rokinon manual focus wide angle lens.

Panasonic LUMIX DMC-G3 16 MP Micro Four-Thirds Interchangeable Lens Camera with 3-Inch Free-Angle Touch-Screen LCD and 14-42mm Lumix G VARIO f/3.5-5.6 Lens

Rokinon FE75MFT-B 7.5mm F3.5 UMC Fisheye Lens for Micro Four Thirds (Olympus PEN and Panasonic)

The Rokinon is a well made, inexpensive fisheye lens that is manual focus only but because the depth of field is so deep on such a wide angle lens you basically don’t even need to focus.  Just dial in the distance to subject on the focus ring and shoot at F8 and you are pretty much guaranteed to get the shot. Colors with this lens are especially vivid which was perfect for a day at Legoland even with cloudy skies.

You have to push through a lot of crap to get out the good

Uncategorized

“Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me.

All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you.

A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have.

We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work.

Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions.

And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.”

Rescue

Fine Art Photography

A friend of mine called to request a special photo shoot for their latest family member – Eva.

Eva is a Chinese crested dog is a hairless breed of dog. Like most hairless dog breeds, the Chinese crested comes in two varieties, with and without fur, which are born in the same litter: the Powder Puff and the Hairless.  This is one of the dogs the often show up in those ugliest dog in the world contests.  But not this cute little sweetie!

Eva – rescued from a mobile home where a pit bull terrorized her. Now in a loving home.

This cute little dog was a pleasure to photograph with those great ears and nearly hairless body but the poor nervous thing just wouldn’t settle down. Caressed in her new mother’s arms, she finally felt safe and sound.

When this dog was rescued after living in constant fear of the pit bull who also shared their cramped quarters in the mobile home, she was nearly hairless. Her hair is now starting to grow back in.

Peony flowers are my all time favorite flowers to work with, they evoke such a classic look, to me they say Victorian age. Something about their full petals. We have several peonies planted on our property and recently moved and divided several plants. They are some of the longest lasting flowering shrubs or plants that you can purchase but they don’t like to be moved or divided so we might have to wait a couple of years before these ones come back to their full splendor. A couple years ago we visited a peony farm in Vermont where the owner admitted to a full on peony passion and the inability to control himself when it came to purchasing new and rare varieties. One plant on his farm cost him something like $4,000. While many of his offerings were common and sold for $20 to $50 some of the higher prices plants fetched upwards to $400 per cutting. Peonies – its a passion!

Fitting home for The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby is a 1925 novel written by American author F. Scott Fitzgerald that follows a cast of characters living in the fictional town of West Egg on prosperous Long Island in the summer of 1922. The story primarily concerns the young and mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby and his quixotic passion and obsession for the beautiful former debutante Daisy Buchanan. Considered to be Fitzgerald’s magnum opus, The Great Gatsby explores themes of decadence, idealism, resistance to change, social upheaval, and excess, creating a portrait of the Jazz Age or the Roaring Twenties that has been described as a cautionary tale regarding the American Dream.
